Booking, pickup, insurance, disputes — everything you need to know.
How do I find a car on Rentro?
Sign up, browse available cars by city, transmission, price, and vehicle type. Filter by Uber eligibility if you're a driver. Click on any listing to see full details, owner reviews, and photos.
How much does it cost to rent?
Prices vary by car type and location. Economy cars: $50–75/day, mid-range sedans: $65–100/day, SUVs: $100–150+/day. Many owners offer 10–20% discounts for weekly bookings. The price shown on a listing is the Host's daily rate — a refundable security bond is held separately at checkout and is not an additional cost if the car is returned in the agreed condition.
What is the security bond?
A refundable deposit (typically $300–1,500) held to protect against damage. If you return the car in good condition, it's refunded 3–5 business days after your rental. Think of it like a hotel deposit.
Do I need to pay for insurance?
Rentro does not charge for insurance. Rentro is a peer-to-peer marketplace and does not provide or broker insurance — every car on Rentro is covered by the Host's own comprehensive policy, which you should confirm at handover. We strongly recommend also checking whether your personal driver's insurance (if any) extends to the rental vehicle. Any claim is handled between you, the Host, and their insurer.
How do I book a car?
Select your dates, review the total cost, message the owner to confirm, and pay through Rentro. Payments are secure and you'll get a confirmation. Then arrange pickup or delivery with the owner.
Can I negotiate the price?
Yes. Message the owner before booking to discuss rates, especially for longer rentals. Many are flexible and happy to offer discounts.
What payment methods do you accept?
Rentro accepts all major credit and debit cards through our secure Stripe payment gateway. Payments are processed immediately.
Can I cancel my booking?
Yes. Cancellation policies vary by owner but are always shown before you book. Cancel 7+ days out for a full refund, or within 24 hours for a partial refund.
What if the owner cancels?
If the owner cancels, Rentro provides a full refund. You can also claim compensation from the owner if the cancellation was without valid reason.
How do I pick up the car?
Many owners offer delivery to your location. Otherwise, you'll pick up at the owner's address. Some offer keyless entry, others meet briefly to hand over keys. It's all coordinated through Rentro messaging.
Do I need my own insurance?
Not mandatory, but highly recommended. Check that the Host's comprehensive insurance covers you as a named renter or allows peer-to-peer rental, and consider extending your own personal driver's insurance to include peer-to-peer rental. Rentro does not provide insurance and is not a party to any claim.
What if there's an accident?
Report it immediately through the Rentro app with photos, and notify the Host within 2 hours. Contact police if required by law. The Host's comprehensive insurance is the first line of cover — any excess and uncovered damage is charged to the renter up to the agreed bond amount. Rentro mediates disputes but does not act as insurer.
Can I use the car for Uber/rideshare?
Only if the listing specifically says the car is Uber-eligible. Many Rentro cars meet Uber's requirements — look for the 'UberX' or 'Comfort' badges.
What if the car has mechanical issues during my rental?
Contact the owner immediately through Rentro. You're both protected by Rentro's dispute system. We mediate fairly and may provide alternative transport or partial refunds.
Do I need a specific license?
You must have a valid Australian driver's license (full or provisional). Learner plates only? You'll need to drive with a licensed driver present.
Can I add another driver?
That's between you and the owner. Discuss it in the in-app messaging before booking. Most owners accommodate it, but will usually ask for the additional driver's name and licence details so their insurance policy covers that driver.
How do I know I can trust the owner?
All owners are verified by Rentro. Check their reviews and ratings. Most have 4–5 stars with detailed comments from previous renters.
What happens after I return the car?
Inspect the car together if possible, or the owner checks it after. Within 3–5 days, your bond is refunded (minus any damage costs if applicable). You can then leave a review.
How do reviews work?
After your rental, you can rate the owner, the car, and leave written feedback. Owners also rate you. These reviews help build trust in the community.
Is my personal data safe?
Yes. Rentro uses bank-level security and SSL encryption. We never share your data with owners beyond what's necessary (name, phone, email). Full privacy policy available on our website.
What if I'm unhappy with the car?
Contact Rentro immediately. If the car doesn't match the listing (e.g., damaged, dirty, mileage exceeds limits), you may cancel with a full refund.
Can I extend my booking?
Yes, if the owner's next booking allows. Message them to discuss. They can adjust the calendar and send you an updated invoice.
Do you offer roadside assistance?
Rentro does not provide roadside assistance directly. Most Australian comprehensive policies include roadside assistance — check with the Host before booking so you know what to do in a breakdown. Some Hosts also subscribe to a roadside service (NRMA / RACV / RACQ etc.) and will share the membership number with you at handover.
What if I lose or damage the keys?
Contact the owner and Rentro immediately. Damage costs may come from your security bond. Always keep keys safe and immediately report loss.
Is there a minimum rental period?
No minimum, but many owners prefer 1+ days. Some allow hourly rentals for local needs. Check each listing for their preferences.
